Job Description
Position Title: Director of Communications
Incumbent: Open
Group: Communications
Job Purpose: The position is responsible as an exempt professional in the
Communications Group to assist Chamber volunteer and staff
leadership to develop and define communications strategies, to
maintain and defend the public image of the Chamber, to develop
strategies for developing and improving the reputation of the Chamber
and its membership, and to oversee activities designed to facilitate
communications between the Chamber and its stakeholders
Job Responsibilities: The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Vice
President of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. Position is
responsible to develop appropriate strategies, tactics, and programs that
enhance and maintain the image of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of
Commerce and its membership. Responsible to develop and execute an
overall communications strategy for the Chamber and oversee all
external communications from the Chamber. Communicate extensively
with business members and other critical Chamber stakeholders, and,
when necessary, represent the Chamber as required in external/internal
functions.
Major Job Accountabilities:
1. Coordinate committees and assist volunteers to meet committee
objectives. Responsible for the following committees/task forces:
a. Communications Council
b. Branding Task Force
c. Others as designated
2. Identify opportunities for Chamber volunteers and staff to present
the business perspective on issues through media, speaking
opportunities and other communications tactics.
3. Develop and maintain a cohesive communications strategy that
presents the Chamber in the best possible light in the minds of all
stakeholders.
4. Cultivate relationships with local media in order to assure that the
business perspectives and Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce
positions are communicated clearly to stakeholders.
5. In consultation with staff and volunteers, assure that the Saint Paul
Area Chamber of Commerce and all of its affiliates present an
accurate and positive image of itself and its members through all
external communications. Affiliate organizations include
Charitable Foundation and Political Action Committee. Assistance
to the Saint Paul Transportation Management Organization.
6. Oversight of all Chamber publications, printed materials and
invitations, weekly communications, specialty items, electronic
information, etc. Specialty items include, but are not limited to the
project management of Annual Membership Directory and
Minnesota Report. Includes development and maintenance of
website and other electronic communications mediums.
7. Oversight and quality control of key messages and branding of all
publications.
8. Development of key communications strategies to our membership
through consistent and relevant messages (internal
communications).
9. Special projects that may provide additional marketing
opportunities for the Chamber to and through the community and
its membership.
10. Other work-related duties as delegated from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
The position requires:
1. Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
2. Ability to confidently communicate (written and orally) with
volunteers, stakeholders and outside stakeholders about complex
business and policy issues.
3. Ability to work effectively with all levels of Chamber staff and
volunteer leadership.
4. Understanding of all communications tactics and technologies
including but not limited to publications, media relations,
advertising, marketing, opinion research and management.
5. A proficient knowledge of computer office technology, including
working familiarity with database software, layout, design, etc.
6. Ability to represent the Chamber in a professional and enthusiastic
manner consistent with the Chamber’s mission and vision.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree in political science,
English, journalism, business or related field and/or three year
professional experience in related field. Previous chamber/association
experience is preferred but not required. A full knowledge of
media/public relations is required with previous professional
management experience. Candidate must have demonstrated ability to
handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced business environment, work with
diverse staff, volunteers and programs. Professional presence and
strong interpersonal skills are a requirement.
